El Paso and San Diego Rise as the Western Race Resets Again

Houston knocked Las Vegas out of first place, El Paso took three of four in Denver, and San Diego matched the Diablos at 19-9 as the Western Circuit produced another change at the top.

Nobody Owns the West

For a moment, Las Vegas appeared ready to become the Western Circuit's next commanding leader. Houston had other ideas. The Mavericks took three of four from the Aces, El Paso recovered from an opening loss in Denver to win three straight, and San Diego handled Seattle to create a tie atop the standings at 19-9. Portland added another winning series, Los Angeles took three in Dallas, and suddenly the West looks less like a race waiting for a favorite than a weekly argument over which contender gets the next turn.

The East offered a different kind of drama. Cincinnati finally failed to win a series, splitting four in New York, but St. Louis immediately recovered from its brutal visit to Queen City Ball Park by sweeping Nashville and cutting the Regents' advantage to four games. Philadelphia supplied the week's other major statement with a four-game sweep in Atlanta. Behind the leaders, Washington's slide has become increasingly difficult to dismiss. The Warriors have dropped seven of nine after a 14-8 start, prompting veteran Miguel Perez to call a players-only meeting as the club searches for the form that made its opening weeks so promising.

Every series, every week

Eastern Circuit Recap

Cincinnati finally settled for a split, St. Louis responded emphatically, and Philadelphia produced a perfect week as Washington's troubles deepened.

Philadelphia Keystones won 4-0
Atlanta Pilots logoPhiladelphia Keystones logo

Atlanta Pilots vs. Philadelphia Keystones

Philadelphia carried its improving form into The Hangar and turned it into the week's most emphatic Eastern road performance. Felipe Rodriguez drove in eight runs on seven hits, drew three walks and remained the Eastern Circuit leader with 39 stolen bases as the Keystones scored at least five runs in every game. Rick Sergent added seven hits and five RBI, giving Philadelphia another steady source of pressure throughout the sweep. Atlanta's Connor Phillips did his best to keep the Pilots competitive with seven hits and five RBI, but Philadelphia repeatedly created separation before Atlanta could turn those contributions into victories. Philadelphia's sweep continued a striking reversal after an uneven opening month and gave Renee Bell of the Liberty Bell Journal something more substantial than optimism: a reason to expect the Keystones to provide another answer next week.

Outstanding PerformerFelipe Rodriguez (Philadelphia Keystones)

7-for-19, 8 RBI, 3 BB; Eastern Circuit leader: 39 SB.

Split 2-2
Boston Shamrocks logoDetroit Motors logo

Boston Shamrocks vs. Detroit Motors

Boston and Detroit alternated control at The Motor Yard, producing a split that featured two comfortable Motors victories and two very different Shamrocks wins. Joe Baker supplied Boston's finest performance, allowing one earned run across eight innings while striking out 10, and Frank Robinson reached base 11 times with five hits, five RBI and six walks. Detroit countered through Art Koenig, whose six hits and five RBI helped the Motors answer Boston's 13-run opening salvo and ultimately protect the split. The series unfolded against difficult injury circumstances on both sides. Detroit was without Huibert Zwiers, while Boston continued to operate without Jaiden Swinton and John Kelso. The Shamrocks had entered the week building momentum after consecutive series victories, but Detroit refused to become another step in that climb. Boston still showed enough pitching and patience at the plate to remain dangerous; the Motors showed enough resilience to keep the series from belonging to them.

Outstanding PerformerJoe Baker (Boston Shamrocks)

Chicago Union won 3-1

Chicago Union vs. Washington Warriors

Washington's difficult June continued at Trident Field, where Chicago won three of four and turned the Warriors' recent stumble into a genuine concern. Jon Naugle gave the Union 8.2 innings of one-run baseball with 10 strikeouts, while Bernie Valdez supplied six hits and four RBI as Chicago followed its sweep of Detroit with another winning series. Doug Rodriquez countered with six hits and four RBI for Washington, helping the Warriors break through for their lone victory, but the larger pattern remained troubling. Washington has lost seven of nine after opening 14-8, and veteran Miguel Perez responded by calling a players-only meeting centered on rediscovering the style of baseball behind that strong start. The Warriors were also without Danny Carroll and Jayden Miller, while Chicago continues to monitor Jordan Blackwell and Edwin Sanchez. The Union's momentum is moving in one direction. Washington now needs to prove its recent trajectory can be reversed before Cincinnati and St. Louis disappear further ahead.

Outstanding PerformerJon Naugle (Chicago Union)

8.2 IP, 1 ER, 10 K.

Split 2-2
Cincinnati Regents logoNew York City Gothams logo

Cincinnati Regents vs. New York City Gothams

New York accomplished something no club had managed this season: it prevented Cincinnati from winning a series. Jose Echevarria remained productive for the Regents with six hits and six RBI, and Danny Baker supplied 7.2 scoreless innings with seven strikeouts, but the Gothams found enough answers to earn a split at Damar Park. Tim Pasquale was central to that resistance, holding Cincinnati to one run across a complete nine-inning performance. New York also survived a wild 10-9 third game that ensured the Regents would not leave town with another winning series. Cincinnati continued without Diego Pena and Won-keun Baek, while Danny Siles remained sidelined for the Gothams. NYC GM Jacob Sanders exclaimed, We almost doubled those bastards from Cincinnati's loss total and the blood price was losing Kirk for 2 weeks! The split hardly qualifies as a crisis for a Cincinnati club now 23-5, but St. Louis' perfect week trimmed the Eastern lead to four games. For New York, simply standing level with the league's most dominant team represented one of its most credible performances of the young season.

Miami Sun Sox won 3-1
Miami Sun Sox logoTampa Bay Thunder logo

Miami Sun Sox vs. Tampa Bay Thunder

Miami's visit to The Thunder Bowl began disastrously and ended as one of the week's more impressive recoveries. Tampa Bay erupted for 14 runs in the opener behind an offense led by John Rodriguez, who finished the series with eight hits and five RBI. The Sun Sox responded by winning the next three and scoring 29 runs along the way. Steve Myers powered the turnaround with eight hits, four RBI and three walks, while Brad Bettinger drove in six and drew four walks as Miami repeatedly created traffic on the bases. The Sun Sox accomplished the comeback while Jon Reeves remained sidelined, turning what could have become a damaging road series into their second consecutive 3-1 week. Valentina Cruz of the Biscayne Bulletin sees a noticeable change in the temperature around the club after another successful series. The next question is whether Miami can carry that energy forward and turn a promising stretch into a sustained climb through the Eastern standings.

Outstanding PerformerSteve Myers (Miami Sun Sox)

8-for-17, 4 RBI, 3 BB.

St. Louis Lions won 4-0
Nashville Bluebirds logoSt. Louis Lions logo

Nashville Bluebirds vs. St. Louis Lions

One week after Cincinnati swept them out of Queen City Ball Park, the Lions supplied the clearest possible response. St. Louis swept Nashville at The Lions Hearth, allowed only seven runs in four games and climbed back within four games of the Eastern lead. Juan Tercero drove the offense with six hits, eight RBI and two walks, while Joe Cream delivered nine scoreless innings with seven strikeouts to anchor a pitching staff that shut Nashville out once and never allowed more than four runs. Jason Somers provided four RBI for the Bluebirds despite collecting only two hits, but Nashville never generated enough sustained offense to challenge St. Louis' control of the series. The Lions continued playing without Mike Herig and Jackson Vaive, making the immediate recovery from last week's disappointment even more significant. Ryan Lunsford of the Gateway Dispatch recognized familiar October-style work: a contender absorbing a difficult series and answering before one bad week could become something larger.

Outstanding PerformerJuan Tercero (St. Louis Lions)

6-for-14, 8 RBI, 2 BB.

Every series, every week

Western Circuit Recap

El Paso and San Diego emerged together at the top after Houston stopped Las Vegas, while Portland and Los Angeles added winning weeks of their own.

Portland Pioneers won 3-1
Arizona Suns logoPortland Pioneers logo

Arizona Suns vs. Portland Pioneers

Portland's recent improvement continued at Pioneers Field, where the home club took the first three games and scored 26 runs before Arizona finally broke through in the finale. Nick Morrison collected seven hits, six RBI and two walks, while Cristiano Sperafico matched his six RBI and added five hits with two walks as the Pioneers consistently found ways to extend innings. Arizona's Manny Flores was excellent in defeat, going 7-for-13 with six RBI and helping the Suns erupt for 12 runs in the final game to avoid a sweep. Portland's performance was particularly useful with Willie Rojas still unavailable, giving the club another winning series despite a significant absence. Owen Mercer of the Rose City Dispatch sees more than a continuation of the previous week: the Pioneers now have credible reason to believe their progress can become something sustained. In a Western Circuit crowded with contenders, Portland is beginning to make itself considerably harder to overlook.

Outstanding PerformerNick Morrison (Portland Pioneers)

7-for-15, 6 RBI, 2 BB.

Los Angeles Knights won 3-1
Dallas Texans logoLos Angeles Knights logo

Dallas Texans vs. Los Angeles Knights

Los Angeles and Dallas spent three games testing every margin before the Knights finally blew the series open, creating consequences in the Texans front office. The first three contests at Everything's Bigger in Texas Ballpark were decided by a single run, and all three required extra innings, with Los Angeles winning twice. Braden Deming led the Knights with nine hits and seven RBI, while Marco Camacho added nine hits, five RBI and two walks to an offense that finally erupted for 15 runs in the finale. Dallas countered through Tony McLaughlin, whose six hits and six RBI kept the Texans within striking distance throughout the close games. The Knights ultimately left with three victories because they survived the tense games and then dominated the one that wasn't. For Dallas, another losing week made an already difficult Western climb even steeper. Dallas' front office patience ran out after a series defined by narrow decisions and GM Chris Johnson was relieved of his duties on Sunday after losing eight of their last nine and dropping to 10th place in the West.

Outstanding PerformerBraden Deming (Los Angeles Knights)

9-for-22, 7 RBI, 1 BB.

El Paso Diablos won 3-1
Denver Cutthroats logoEl Paso Diablos logo

Denver Cutthroats vs. El Paso Diablos

Denver appeared ready to continue its resurgence when it opened the series at Cutter's Cove with a tight victory. El Paso spent the next three games dismantling that possibility. Skylar Cole went 8-for-16 with eight RBI and three walks, while Gabe Espinoza matched him with eight RBI as the Diablos scored 25 runs across their three victories. Denver's Jayden Williams remained difficult to retire, collecting eight hits in 15 at-bats, but the Cutthroats couldn't convert that production into enough sustained offense once El Paso took control. Greg Morris remained sidelined for the Diablos, yet their depth was enough to overcome both the absence and the opening loss. The result pushed El Paso to 19-9 and into a share of first place in the Western Circuit. Denver had looked ready to force its way into the center of the race; instead, the Diablos reminded everyone why they remain one of its defining clubs.

Outstanding PerformerSkylar Cole (El Paso Diablos)

8-for-16, 8 RBI, 3 BB.

Houston Mavericks won 3-1
Houston Mavericks logoLas Vegas Aces logo

Houston Mavericks vs. Las Vegas Aces

Las Vegas arrived at Mavericks Ballpark holding first place and left having surrendered it. Houston won three of four, taking the first two games by a single run before responding to an 11-run Las Vegas eruption with a decisive victory in the finale. Leo Canales gave the Mavericks 5.2 scoreless innings with seven strikeouts, providing exactly the kind of pitching performance Houston needed after consecutive losing series. Las Vegas received strong work from Troy Degenstein, who allowed one run over seven innings with eight strikeouts, while Gui-fan Xiong drove in five runs and drew three walks. The Aces continued without Matt Gagne, but the larger issue was Houston's ability to win the close games that had recently escaped it. The Mavericks didn't erase the questions created by their previous two weeks, but they stopped the slide at the most important possible moment and prevented Las Vegas from establishing control of the West.

Outstanding PerformerLeo Canales (Houston Mavericks)

5.2 IP, 0 ER, 7 K.

Split 2-2
Minnesota Loons logoSan Francisco Peanuts logo

Minnesota Loons vs. San Francisco Peanuts

Four games at The Asylum at Loons Ballpark produced four competitive pitching contests and a split that neither Minnesota nor San Francisco could break. Sung-jin Jang was the series' most productive hitter, collecting eight hits, driving in six and drawing four walks as Minnesota recovered from an opening loss to win the middle two games. San Francisco answered behind John O'Connor, who allowed one run across 8.1 innings, while Kevin Ball reached base seven times and drove in five runs to help the Peanuts take the opener and the finale. Minnesota continued without Arturo Garcia and Tucker Halverson, while Tony Hanner remained sidelined for San Francisco. Three of the four games were decided by three runs or fewer, and the clubs traded one-run extra-inning victories in the second and fourth contests. In a week defined by movement at the top of the West, this basement battle was a reminder that there are teams already looking forward to next season.

Outstanding PerformerSung-jin Jang (Minnesota Loons)

8-for-15, 6 RBI, 4 BB.

San Diego Roadrunners won 3-1
San Diego Roadrunners logoSeattle Gulls logo

San Diego Roadrunners vs. Seattle Gulls

San Diego used a balanced road performance at Seagull Stadium to climb into a share of the Western Circuit lead. Noah Jones remained at the center of everything, producing six hits, six RBI and four walks while carrying a circuit-leading .414 batting average. Jonathan Woods supplied 8.1 scoreless innings with seven strikeouts, giving the Roadrunners the dominant start they needed to complement an offense that scored at least four runs in three victories. Seattle's Andrew O'Neal was outstanding despite the series loss, collecting nine hits in 20 at-bats and driving in four while helping the Gulls explode for 10 runs in their lone win. San Diego continued navigating injuries to Blaine Feeney and Travis Rohe, but the club's depth again proved sufficient. At 19-9, the Roadrunners now stand alongside El Paso at the top of a Western race that seems to produce a new configuration every week.

Outstanding PerformerNoah Jones (San Diego Roadrunners)

6-for-16, 6 RBI, 4 BB; Western Circuit leader: 0.414 AVG.

From the beat

Around the Circuit

Philadelphia Is Giving Its Optimism Some Weight

A four-game sweep in Atlanta gave the Keystones something more useful than another encouraging stretch. Philadelphia is beginning to create the expectation that another answer will be waiting when the next series begins.

The Pioneers Keep Building

Taking three of four from Arizona extended Portland's progress beyond a single good week. The Pioneers have earned the chance to see whether this stretch can become something more durable.

The Lions Answer Like a Contender

St. Louis responded to a four-game sweep in Cincinnati by immediately delivering one of its own. That ability to absorb a difficult series and move forward is familiar work for a club with larger ambitions.

Miami's Mood Is Changing

Three straight victories after a brutal series opener changed the temperature around the Sun Sox quickly. Now Miami has to prove that energy travels with it into another week.
